So you've decided to take the plunge
and big chop. As legendary Coco Channel perfectly puts it, "A
woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life." Whether you
choose to big chop and grow your hair or to keep it short, the journey will be
like none other (dramatic? believe me). Not sure what to expect? Here are five things you should know
before you big chop.
1. You'll Never Be Ready
In deciding to go natural, you'll probably do some research to see
style inspirations (#goals) or even big chop
reaction videos. The truth is, nothing will fully prepare you. Don't
get me wrong, research is good if you're unsure of exactly what you want, and
to guide you moving forward on your natural hair journey. But the feelings you
get while doing the big chop and after are unique to you and you alone. Some
people plan their big chop months in advance, for some it's a vibe they work
with.
You'll generally go through nearly every emotion possible.
Excitement, anxiousness, uncertainty, self-doubt, self-love and all others in between. It's
something you'll understand once you've big chopped. No amount of prep work can
prepare you, but you'll be fine.
2. You
May End Up a Lone Ranger
This point is crucial. You must understand not everyone will be
excited about your big chop and that's fine. Before you even cut your hair, you
might tell people who you thought you could depend on for support,
encouragement and advice. Sadly, not all of them will share your
excitement about your natural hair journey. Regardless, you shouldn't let the
naysayers deter you. Who needs 'em anyway? #solodolo.
After the chop, you'll probably get two sets of reactions, the
hate parade and people who are here for your greatness. People will ask
why, they'll feel the need to voice their unsolicited opinions. Never mind
them. And you will get support from persons you least expect it from,
strangers admiring your new do and asking for advice. You've made it this far,
don't let the haters sway you.

3. The Natural Hair Community
Is Confusing
Don't become overwhelmed in trying to keep up with the
'community'. Trends in the natural hair community change so often, it makes no
sense trying to keep up with them all. There's a little bit of everything so
you'll definitely find a voice to identify with.
There are the DIYers, the lazy naturals, the boujee naturals, undercover naturals and the list goes on and on. It’s your hair do what you want. You will be able to
take from different niches within the natural hair community just don't become
so obsessed with what's right and what's wrong. Do you boo.

4. Length Isn't All That
When you first big chop, you might be so uncomfortable with your hair your only goal will be to grow it out. It may seem like your hair isn't growing, but chances are you're just not seeing it. Pictures are a good way to see the growth. Don't be in such a rush to get to your #goallenght that you don't enjoy the process. Don't be so frustrated with your seemingly lack of growth that you forget to experiment with and love your hair.

5. Boredom is Inevitable
The novelty of your chop won't last
forever. In the period where it's too short for much manipulation you'll probably get restless. If you're keeping it short you can experiment with
different cuts, designs and even colour. Experiment but be mindful that
even short hair needs loving. So if colour is your way of switching it
up remember, you'll need to pay extra attention to moisture. You could
also experiment with different protective styles. Depending on the how long or
short your hair is you could try wigs, braids, clip ins and so much more.
Big chopping is an empowering experience. If you're wondering if
you should, that's enough reason to do it. Do it and enjoy the journey that
follows. Have you big chopped recently? What was your experience like? Comment
